Bhagat Singh Biography
During a silent march denouncing the Simon Commission in 1928, Bhagat Singh plotted with others to assassinate the police officer responsible for the killing of Indian writer and politician Lala Lajpat Rai, one of the founders of National College. Instead, junior officer J.P. Saunders was slain in a case of mistaken identity, and Bhagat Singh was forced to depart Lahore to avoid the death penalty. To protest the execution of the Defence of India Act, he and an associate launched a bomb at the Central Legislative Assembly in Delhi in 1929, then surrendered. For the murder of Saunders, he was hung at the age of 23.
