Irfan Kolothum Thodi (KT Irfan) is an Indian athlete who qualified for the Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020 for the first time. He specializes in 20-kilometer walks. In Naomi, Japan, he finished fourth in the Asian Race Walking Championships’ 20 km event. Irfan, 29, clocked 1 hour 20 minutes and 57 seconds, beating the qualifying time for the Tokyo Olympics of 1 hour 21 minutes.

Irfan Kolothum Thodi was born in the Malappurm district of Kerala’s Kizhuparamba on February 8, 1990. He was always fascinated by the Indian Army as a child and aspired to one day do his country proud. His desire to join the Indian army drove him to get up early every morning to attend training. Football is a popular sport in Kerala, and KT enjoyed playing it. In reality, KT enjoyed all sports. KT used to give refreshments to a walker named Ribas, who was regarded as the village’s best walker at the time. That piqued KT’s curiosity, and he took careful note of his exercise schedule.

KT Irfan’s admiration for the Indian army led him to enlist in the army in March 2010 as part of the sports quota. In the Madras Regimen Centre, he was instructed by Subedar Ramkumar. Every morning, KT would get up at 5 a.m. to begin his training workouts. His morning workout consisted of a 1km run warm-up, a 5km walk warm-up, full-body stretching, and other physical exercises. His morning training took him almost 3 hours to complete. He trained for 2.5 hours in the evening, which included a 1km run and a warm-up walk, followed by body stretching exercises. After entering the Indian Army, KT was stationed in Ooty, where he spent the majority of his time training. Training with army facilities was first-rate, and it was also a pivotal period in his life. KT Irfan and his family currently reside in Kuniyil, Kizhuparamba.

KT Irfan is known as the “Malappuram Express,” a nickname he got from his homeland. On countless occasions, KT has made India proud. He set the Indian national record in the 20 km walk with a time of 1:20:21 and finished 10th at the London 2012 Olympics. Irfan finished fifth in the IAAF 20 km Race Walking Challenge event at Taicang, China, in March 2013. In Patiala, KT Irfan competed in the Federation Cup, recording a personal best of 1:22:09.

With a time of 1:26:18, the Kerala race walker also won the 20 km event at the National Open Race Walk Championships in Chennai in February. By competing in the Asian Race Walking Championships in Naomi, Japan, KT Irfan became the first Indian to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. The 29-year-old clocked 1 hour 20 minutes and 57 seconds, beating the qualifying time of 1 hour 21 minutes set by the Tokyo Olympics.
